Last night around supper time Sam had another febrile seizure. Although not as bad this time, we definately had glassey eyes, light blue lips and a pretty out of it kiddo for a good 30ish seconds. Since we did this all last October (see this post), Bryan and I were able to stay pretty calm and helped him through it.
Yesterday Sam started coughing a strange cough that got our attention. He was fine during the day and went down normally for his afternoon nap but really struggled to wake up at at the end of it. He was snuggling with Bryan as we were trying to get him up for dinner and we noticed he felt warm. I took his temp and it was 100.1- a low fever but not too bad. About two minutes later, he sat up like he was very, VERY startled and gave two huge full body jerks with wild eyes and then was out of it for a bit. We were able to get him to focus on us by the 5th or 6th time we called his name but then he would go glassy again. We got up and put ice packs on his back and belly to try to cool him quickly and then he snapped out of it and threw up in the sink. And it was done. We got some Motrin (yeah!) in him and called the doctor since we had done this before. She said since he was good now and had perked up quickly (like the last time), she was pretty sure it was another seizure and we should keep up with Motrin through the night and get him into the office in the a.m. to see what caused it- thinking it was another ear infection like before. He played, had a bath and went to bed a normal kiddo.
About 11:30 he was up, fussy and feverish again so we gave another dose of Motrin. He fell quickly back to sleep and I put him in his crib. Ten minutes later we heard him scream a few times and found him laying in vomit. This time we don't think he had another siezure but he was really worked up and jerking around and doing weird swallowing things... acting strange enough to make us call the on-call doctor again. She said since things had happened twice, we needed to take him in and have him checked out. We hopped into the car and took him to Mercy. We were the only ones there and they had us in right away and found he has a full blown ear infection in his right ear which they think caused the seizure. They gave him a super-duper shot of antibiotics to clear up the ear infection and cough quickly. We were out of there in just about an hour with an exhausted little boy. We were all in bed by 2:00 and Sam slept soundly until 8:15 this morning!
Bryan and I have accepted that things happen at our house in a slightly more dramatic way than they do at most others with this little guy. : ) 2/2 with ear infections and seizures! Sheesh. He has been through a lot and continues to be a happy, happy trooper through it all! We are anxious to see how "boring" kid number two is someday! : ) Thanks for your continued thoughts and prayers for our little guy. I'll post a few recent pictures of the handsome man soon!

Thinking of you! I think I told you that my youngest nephew suffered from the same seizures, starting around one. He's 14 now and TOTALLY fine! He outgrew them at an early age. Hugs to all!
