Pictures from our Denver trip

I didn't take a camera with us to Denver when Sam and I went the first week of January so Abbie emailed me the ones she had.  We obviously didn't take many during our week together as we didn't do much other than play around and enjoy each other's company.  It was a great week for sure.  As you can see, their kids are so stinkin cute and doing well.  Kate lost her second tooth while we were there and you can see her hole in front if you look closely!  Ab has babe number four in her tum and is doing well.  It's strange that the next time we are out there a new Sogard will be under the roof and the boys will be in the bunk beds in Daniel's room and Kate and the babe will be set up in her's.  My sister Jamie is doing really well there too and it was fun to get to spend some normal time with her.  We are so thankful to have those guys out there just a few minutes apart so we can easily spend time together.  Enjoy a few pictures!

2nd Ear Infection = 2nd Febrile Seizure = 1st Trip to the ER

Last night around supper time Sam had another febrile seizure.  Although not as bad this time, we definately had glassey eyes, light blue lips and a pretty out of it kiddo for a good 30ish seconds.  Since we did this all last October (see this post), Bryan and I were able to stay pretty calm and helped him through it.

Yesterday Sam started coughing a strange cough that got our attention.  He was fine during the day and went down normally for his afternoon nap but really struggled to wake up at at the end of it.  He was snuggling with Bryan as we were trying to get him up for dinner and we noticed he felt warm.  I took his temp and it was 100.1- a low fever but not too bad.  About two minutes later, he sat up like he was very, VERY startled and gave two huge full body jerks with wild eyes and then was out of it for a bit.  We were able to get him to focus on us by the 5th or 6th time we called his name but then he would go glassy again.  We got up and put ice packs on his back and belly to try to cool him quickly and then he snapped out of it and threw up in the sink.  And it was done.  We got some Motrin (yeah!) in him and called the doctor since we had done this before.  She said since he was good now and had perked up quickly (like the last time), she was pretty sure it was another seizure and we should keep up with Motrin through the night and get him into the office in the a.m. to see what caused it- thinking it was another ear infection like before.  He played, had a bath and went to bed a normal kiddo.

About 11:30 he was up, fussy and feverish again so we gave another dose of Motrin.  He fell quickly back to sleep and I put him in his crib.  Ten minutes later we heard him scream a few times and found him laying in vomit.  This time we don't think he had another siezure but he was really worked up and jerking around and doing weird swallowing things... acting strange enough to make us call the on-call doctor again.  She said since things had happened twice, we needed to take him in and have him checked out.  We hopped into the car and took him to Mercy.  We were the only ones there and they had us in right away and found he has a full blown ear infection in his right ear which they think caused the seizure.  They gave him a super-duper shot of antibiotics to clear up the ear infection and cough quickly.  We were out of there in just about an hour with an exhausted little boy.  We were all in bed by 2:00 and Sam slept soundly until 8:15 this morning!

Bryan and I have accepted that things happen at our house in a slightly more dramatic way than they do at most others with this little guy.  : )  2/2 with ear infections and seizures!  Sheesh.  He has been through a lot and continues to be a happy, happy trooper through it all!  We are anxious to see how "boring" kid number two is someday!  : )  Thanks for your continued thoughts and prayers for our little guy.  I'll post a few recent pictures of the handsome man soon!

Denver Orthopaedic Check Up 1.5.10

Last week, Sam and I flew to Denver to see Dr. Benson again to check his hip.  He has been in a hip brace at night since the middle of October when he was diagnosed with left hip dysplasia.  We were anxious to see if things were moving in the right direction.  Good news!!!!  The xray below shows his hip back in October (right) and then last week (left).  The goal is for the highlighted angle to be at 25 degrees by a year.  In October, Sam's left hip was at 34.4 degrees- not maturing as rapidly as it should.  With the brace encouraging his hip socket to deepen, it is now at 29.4 degrees!!!!!!!!!!!!!  This allows the bones to do whatever they are supposed to do next and Dr. Benson was very pleased.  You can't see the other highlights from this scan of the xray very well but several other little improvements could be seen in both hips (alignment, white fuzzy spots which mean something with his bones, etc)... the bad left hip is getting better quickly and the good right hip was looking even more beautiful!  We are erroring on the side of caution and he will wear his brace until May or June when we go back to Dr. Benson again.  The brace doesn't bother him at all at night and he can now sleep on his back, sides or belly without frustration.  We couldn't be more pleased!  Way to go Sam and his hips!!!!!

New Year's Eve

Sam and I had a little photo shoot on New Year's Eve!  We were home Thursday night with a little boy that couldn't quite shake a stomach bug, but as you can see, we were on the tail end of it and he was pretty darn happy while we messed around.  If you noticed in the posts below, Bryan and I have been having issues with our camera lately so I took this as a chance to mess around a little with the different settings.  Seems we still have a lot to learn with the fancy thing.  We wish you and your family a very happy and healthy 2010!

Back to CR

We wrapped up our Christmas holiday with a stop back in Cedar Rapids with Bryan's mom, Dan and Sarah.  It was a busy and delightful holiday.  We were so thankful to get to spend time with so much of our family.

Christmas with Randy

We were lucky to be able to host Christmas with Bryan's dad at our house this year.  I enjoy hosting although I wasn't too orgnaized this time and Sam loved having everyone in his space.  This was the first night of yucky tum/flu for Sam so not many pictures.  PS- no teasing about our flat-top tree in the background... 9 foot tree doesn't fit so it's missing the top section!  : )

Sogard Christmas in Ames

This Christmas we were blessed to be able to spend a few good days in a row with the whole Sogard family which is hard with all of the running and activities we try to cram into one holiday week.  It has only been two months since we left Denver but man was it good to see the Jamie and Matt's again!  The kids seemed to have grown a foot to me.  : )  Since we had three full days in a row together, we were able to do all of our old family traditions... steak and twice baked potatoes, candlelight church and presents on Christmas Eve, Santa and cornish hens on Christmas, ping pong, Christmas bingo and lots and lots of eating!  : )

Sam totally loves Grandpa the most.  It's pretty sweet to watch.  They are never far apart.

Christmas with Karen's Siblings

All of Karen's siblings and their kids were able to celebrate this year on the 20th at Dan and Karen's house.  It's quite the group and day... loud and lots of food!  It's so nice that everyone can get together.
PS- our camera beat us up this day for sure.  Not a darn clear picture taken!  : (

Sheesh!

Love this one  : )

Woods Christmas in Ryan

Every year the weekend before Christmas a giant crew of Woods' get together at the gym in Ryan.  I think this year Pat was the only one with his whole group there.  It's pretty neat to see him and his siblings and all of us there because of them!

Four generations... Bryan, Sam, Bryan's mom Karen and her dad Pat, aka Pappy

Pat and all 5 of his kids

And here's Pat's whole crew!!  Everyone is here but one who was home not feeling well!  Pretty special.

Nudie Man

Why would I sit in the tub Mom?!  : )

Look at those buns!!!  : )  Not sure why he's standing with his legs so far apart but notice how
he stands on the insides of his feet with his toes curled?  That's what we are working on.
He just doesn't have a stable base do to this habit.

Merry Christmas!!
